AMR (automated meter reading) collects meter reads when a vehicle or walker passes within radio range; the utility still drives the routes. AMI (advanced metering infrastructure) is a fixed network: endpoints on each meter transmit reads through gateways to the utility automatically, several times a day, with no truck rolls. The practical difference is data frequency and direction. AMI gives daily or hourly reads and two-way communication, which is what makes leak flags, tamper alerts, and continuous-use detection possible. Most Ontario utilities moving off manual reads today weigh drive-by AMR against fixed-network AMI as the two upgrade paths.
Each water meter connects to a radio endpoint (an MIU) that transmits encrypted reads to gateways, sometimes called collectors, mounted on towers, standpipes, or buildings. Gateways forward the data to head-end software such as Neptune 360, where the utility sees consumption per account. Reads typically arrive multiple times per day, so billing runs on actual consumption instead of estimates, and unusual patterns show up in days rather than at the end of a billing cycle.
Meter data is encrypted in transit from the endpoint through the network to the utility's software, and it contains consumption volume, not what the water was used for. Each endpoint transmits a unique ID matched electronically to the account. The data is used for billing and system operations. Yes. Fixed-network AMI scales down as well as up. A network serving a few hundred endpoints needs only the gateways required for coverage, and the daily read data carries the same operational value: leak flags, continuous-use alerts, and billing on actuals. For small operations without a dedicated data analyst, the constraint is usually staff time to watch the data, not the technology. That is the gap a managed monitoring service covers.
